An all black non-mofuku kitsuke!

I have struggled for years with how to make this kitsuke a reality. I debated whether or not to alter mofuku items to fit the theme or to hunt out specifically black but non-mofuku items. I decided on the latter. Truly, the kimono itself was the most challenging part. Most black kimono are kuromontsuki and are far too formal what I had in mind. Other mostly black items have very bright patterns that detract from the aesthetic I was aiming for. This komon that I used for the ensemble was one that I had custom made (due to my "larger than average Japanese size"... that would be a US L typically...). It took several months for it to be tailored, so while it is awase, and it is now long past awase season where I live, I figured I could give it a go in my well air-conditioned apartment.

This was the final result:

Admittedly, some of the pieces are a little less black than the others, and I
wore white tabi because I’m not a fan of black or patterned tabi usually. The
hardest thing to see may be the obijime as it actually has small red threads

The obi might be mistaken as having metallic threads, but it is actually cleverly woven to trick the eye into thinking that. It is actually just black and grey. It is one of two authentic Nishijin-ori nagoya obi in my collection that I had made-to-order, and it is one of my favorites.

The only plain black item is the haneri, but as white haneri are typically worn with mofuku, this should not be mistaken for funeral wear.

I’m really happy with the ensemble, and I can’t wait to wear it again!

I got invited to a last-minute New Year's Eve tea ceremony at a dear friend's house. It was a casual affair, and since a few of us have babies, they were invited as well. :) They both behaved surprisingly well for the most part (although they both got a little fussy during usucha). It was such a lovely time, and I hope I get more opportunities like this in the future.

Here is my year in kimono! My outfits were few this year due
to being a new mom, and there were several only done on the mannequin since I
couldn’t wear them in the first months after my son was born. The first one I
wore this year is the only one I wore in later pregnancy (the brown and black
ume komon). I also made and altered several kimono and obi this year. Next
year, I hope to do a little more, and maybe there will be more children’s
kimono soon!

I have always disliked two-piece kimono because they rarely ever look as neat as a regular kimono, but this one seems better than the others. I'm thinking of making my own prototype similar to this to see how it works on myself and maybe just to have that quick "go-to" outfit when I'm in a time crunch, and it's not a formal situation. I actually already own the t-shirt juban she wears (and it works surprisingly well!) and I've strongly debated converting some of my more damaged obi to the type she wears here.

How do you feel about this kind of kimono? Would you wear it?

At first, I wanted to use a fairly large obidome, but then I realized that the owl on the front would be too covered, so I switched to these smaller beads on the side instead. I also used this as an opportunity to test out my new T-shirt juban that I bought from Kimonoya Kururi. I love the simplicity of the t-shirt juban, and I have a feeling I will continue using it for many more looks!
The traditional calendar simply does not work for my area, and it is difficult to follow in Japan these days due to a warmer overall climate.

Memphis vs. Traditional Kimono Seasonality Chart

As you can see, the usumono season is much longer here than the traditional Japanese season. To be frank, the hitoe season might be even earlier in March and later in November in my area. I also left a little more grey area in between seasons because our temperatures can fluctuate so much. This year, we have temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius in late September, but only a few years ago, it was more like 15-20 degrees C. The beginning and tail end of seasons are so unpredictable!

So, what does the seasonality chart look like for your area?JFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05405953466715564292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5815785952156145333.post-63470422209938278062017-08-30T11:27:00.000-05:002017-08-30T11:28:29.204-05:00Yukata Coordination App for iPhone Review - 浴衣合わせ

The yukata coordination app is basically a lite version of the kimono coordination app, so most of the pros and cons are the same. There aren't as many pages or options, so if all you want is to see how an obi/kimono combination will look, this might be the better app regardless of whether or not you are trying to coordinate yukata or more formal items.

Pros

Able to see items in kimono silhouette

Can save completed looks to phone

Free

Mostly self-explanatory and some English so little to no Japanese language is required for coordination functions

Cons

Slow to load

High res pictures needed for the best final images

Shading on completed looks can distort colors

Can't delete sample coordination items (can actually buy some of these from the app)

Can be too easy to accidentally delete your items

Can't coordinate accessories

This app (and its complimentary yukata coordination app) is the only kimono coordination app I've been able to find so far for the iPhone. The app takes some time to load, especially the first time. It crashed on me several times until I just let it run for a little while and let it load all of the images. There are three main pages you can access from the title screen - the coordination page, the dressing sample page, and the "convenient book" page. The coordination page is the main feature and allows you to upload your own images (or use their provided ones, often items for sale) to compare kimono, obi, obiage, and obijime. Just select a swatch for each section, and it will add it to the image. Options can be selected by clicking the little hammer in the bottom right corner of the image. Selecting the kimono image will let you see the completed look. The next option allows you to change the season (can choose awase/hitoe and usumono). The third option (the fan) links you to items in app that can be purchased. The trash can allows you to delete images that you have added. I found that you need to be careful with the delete function because it can be easy to accidentally delete the wrong item, and you need to reselect delete to go back to coordinating. You also can't add any other accessories, so haneri, obidome, etc. are out.

Pressing a plus sign on page will allow you to upload an image of that item from your phone's pictures (for example, clicking on the obi page and then the plus sign will allow you to upload a picture of an obi in your collection). Each section will crop the image differently to fit that type of item. You'll probably need to play around with it to figure out which size/resolution images will work. I found that higher res images are really needed to get the best final results. As far as how different kimono types display, I was able to adequately show the kimono for several different formalities (houmongi, iromuji, komon, etc.). You can't change the sleeve length on the final image, so furisode will show up like houmongi, but for coordination purposes, it should be sufficient.

As for the other pages, the dressing sample page shows you pictures (real life and from the app) to give you inspiration. You can add your own coordinations by selecting the plus sign. The "convenient book" page has information about TPO, seasonality, etc., but it is very short and all in Japanese, so I found this to be less helpful.

In conclusion, this app will definitely work if you want a quick check on an ensemble you're planning, but don't expect any high quality images or advanced functions.

Here's the TL;DR pros and cons of this app:

Pros

Able to see items in kimono silhouette

Can save completed looks to phone

Free

Mostly self-explanatory and some English so little to no Japanese language is required for coordination functions

Cons

Slow to load

Japanese only on "convenient book" pages

High res pictures needed for the best final images

Shading on completed looks can distort colors

Obijime looks awful unless using their provided images

Can't delete sample coordination items (can actually buy some of these from the app)

Can be too easy to accidentally delete your items

Can't coordinate haneri, obidome, or other accessories

First, after I finished this handmade kimono, I tried to make a few more; this time from tanmono. The first is a poly ro komon, and the second is a cotton yukata. I wanted to style the yukata before posting pictures of it in its finished form, so this is just a shot of the okumi seam so you can see the progress. (I hope you'll forgive any sewing issues, especially on the poly komon, as the fabric was difficult to work with, and I'm definitely not a professional!)
For my last week of maternity leave, I really wanted to
finish a sewing project. I bought the fabric for this kimono a long time ago,
but I have only gotten around to making it now because the baby has started
going to daycare. So here's the finished product (the color is most accurate in
the close-up photos). It's a cotton-linen blend with white flower embroidery. I
did a casual pairing with a hanhaba obi just for picture purposes. The obi is
tied in <span style="font-family: "ms gothic"; mso-bidi-font-family: "MS Gothic";">二色鼓結び
(futairo tsuzumi musubi).

I missed Gofuku no Hi since I was out of town and sick
(still sick though), so here's my super late contribution! This townscape
yukata arrived today so I paired it with a reversible red and black kingyo
hanhaba obi. This musubi required an obijime, so I used a green and white
checkerboard sanbuhimo with a silver dragonfly obidome.
I put together this ensemble in honor of kodomo no hi (<span style="font-family: "ms gothic"; mso-bidi-font-family: "MS Gothic";">こどもの日)
tomorrow. The kimono is pink cotton seersucker, and I made the matching hanhaba
obi and haneri out of cotton nursery fabric with a pattern of baby ducks. It's
a rather lightweight ensemble, but our weather has been around 80 degrees F
(about 27 degrees C) for the past few weeks. This was also my first time doing
musubi with a sanjuuhimo, but I'm happy with the result!
Today's kitsuke was a lesson in problem solving! I ordered a
heko obi for this yukata, and the dimensions were listed incorrectly. Instead
of the adult size that was listed, I received a child's size... It was a good
buy so I figured it was not worth returning. At first I thought I might just
use it as a puchi-heko obi or even for fabric, but then I decided to see if I
could find a way to tie it. One of my favorite books (<span style="font-family: "MS Gothic"; mso-bidi-font-family: "MS Gothic";">ファブリック帯の本) has many ways
to tie heko obi, including using long scarves, so I modeled it after those
musubi. I also used a hanhaba obi tying tool (kind of like biyosugata but for
hanhaba) to help provide support. I hope you like it!

I got this cotton kimono and obi fairly recently and was dying to see them together. I tried to use colors in the obi for this ensemble to help keep the spring look, since an orange kimono could easily lean toward autumn.
While the Facebook page has definitely been nice in many regards, the forums served as a wealth of knowledge, and it will be nice to be able have people add to that knowledge bank again. Here is the official message that former members received a few days ago:

"Good Day Everyone,

We are very excited to announce that after a 2+ year hiatus, the Immortal
Geisha Forums shall be re-launched!

While we've been happy with having the Facebook group, we came to realize
there was a limitation with retaining educational and informative
information. In order to maximize the benefits of all platforms, we've
decided to re-open the forums along with keeping the Facebook group active.
Additionally, the main website wiki has received a much needed overhaul
along with some new surprises.

Today, we will be switching the DNS for ImmortalGeisha.com over to the new
server. It can take up to 72 hours for a DNS to resolve. If after 72
hours you are still seeing the old design for Immortal Geisha, please
ensure your browser cache has been purged.

The forums will re-launched on the 21th of March (providing the DNS change
goes without problems). You will find an announcement and link to the
forums on the homepage of ImmortalGeisha.com along with an announcement in
the Facebook Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ImmortalGeisha/

In addition to reading the Welcome Back thread, please ensure that you read
through the rules and guidelines before signing up as we've done an
overhaul on the rules. Also, please be patient as moderators will be
manually activating accounts and account activation could take from a few
minutes to a few hours, depending on when the moderators are online.

We are excited to start this new chapter of Immortal Geisha with you and
look forward to seeing you on the 21st of March!
One important note for former members: everyone will have to make new accounts. For most of my pregnancy, I have avoided doing any kitsuke - even for practice. With hormones making me generally not feel well for a good amount of the time and (of course) an ever-changing body to deal with, it just felt like too much. However, this past weekend, I had a good reason to try to get dressed in kimono. It was the annual local Japanese food event, "Oishii Japan", and my tea ceremony group was asked to do a short presentation. The outfit I ultimately ended up choosing was not something I would usually wear for tea, but I went with it considering it was a casual event, and I had a limited number of things that still fit and would be comfortable enough.

I went with a synthetic ume patterned komon for a couple of reasons besides fit. This was a busy and crowded event and with the added pregnancy body functions (I won't go into that...), the risk of damaging a silk kimono was fairly high. My shamisen teacher recommended that I just wear hanhaba obi for comfort rather than try to wrangle a nagoya obi. I had also looked at wearing a heko obi, but I had none that would look appropriate or fit correctly. I figured a dark hanhaba obi would then be the most flattering with this kimono, and I settled on this reversible polka dot one. I tied it in karuta musubi, in case I needed to lay back in a chair or something. Since this was for tea, I stuck with plain white haneri and tabi. The final touches were a deep turquoise obijime and turquoise zori.

In case you were curious, I did have to make some adjustments in the fitting and what I wore underneath the kimono. I can no longer fit into my kimono bra, so I just stuck with a regular maternity/nursing bra and a camisole. To help compensate for the larger-than-normal gap underneath the breasts, I folded a hand towel in thirds lengthwise (normally I only have to do this in half) and tied in on with a datejime. I used my normal hip padding for my back. I am not a big fan of one-piece juban, and I also had none that would fit now anyway, so I opted for the two-piece variety. The catch was, I could only use the top as my belly prevented me from being able to wear the susoyoke. I didn't want my bare legs to show should the panels come open, so I wore some black maternity tights for the bottom half. The top part of the juban only barely fit over my belly, but I was able to keep the collar area closed like normal by using a korin and koshihimo (usually I'd use a datejime but I didn't have anymore that would fit). The ohashori of the kimono had to be tied quite high, just under my ribs. This was not too uncomfortable for most of the day, but by the end of the event, the koshihimo was digging in a little. The other koshihimo was tied only a little higher than normal. (All of the various ties only barely fit now, so I am not sure if I try again before the pregnancy is over that they will fit at all!) I had to tie the obi very high, almost over my bust! I used a special type of obiita that allows the obi to be turned around very easily, and this proved to be very helpful.

As for the event itself, we served tastings of matcha and sweets throughout most of the event, culminating with an abbreviated example of tea ceremony led by our tea master. (I may have some pictures of this part taken by a photographer friend to share later.) While I often am asked to act as either a main guest or assistant for these types of things, Sensei asked me to narrate for the audience this time around - which was welcome considering it is getting more and more difficult to get up off the ground these days! The presentation seemed to be very well received, and a few people asked when the next lessons will be, so I hope we see some new faces in upcoming classes!

JFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05405953466715564292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5815785952156145333.post-87858843331250253812016-12-28T08:06:00.000-06:002016-12-28T08:11:21.993-06:002016 RecapI apologize for the long hiatus on this blog. 2016 was a pretty bad year for me kimono-wise just because I didn't have the ability (surgery and really rough 1st trimester of pregnancy) or the opportunity to wear them as much as I would have liked. I made a small collage of the outfits I wore or styled.

The most pervasive theme I notice is that I focused more strongly on casual outfits. Cottons and tsumugi were favorites, and bold obiage were used to make the kimono more youthful and modern. There were a few colored haneri and tabi uses early in the year, but since most of the later occasions were more formal or for tea ceremony practice, I stuck with mostly white. As usual, I pretty much stayed away from vintage and kimono hime. (They look great on many people, but just not on me!) The loudest outfit by far was the playing card yukata that I styled for a fashion show in July. It really can't be seen in the photo, but there is a small silver dice obikazari, and the obidome is a roulette wheel. The last kimono I wore this year was a blue shibori hitoe kimono for a shamisen performance. Technically, it's a pregnancy kitsuke since I was 13 weeks at the time, but I wasn't really showing then so fitting was essentially the same.

Unfortunately, I don't see myself posting too frequently in the coming year as well due to having a baby on the way. I hope to have at least one pregnancy kitsuke to show before it's all over though. And who knows? Maybe I'll have some cute baby kitsuke in the future in addition to my own!JFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05405953466715564292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5815785952156145333.post-46025812634807207122016-06-30T14:15:00.000-05:002016-07-23T14:21:32.906-05:00June Chanoyu Okeiko Weekend
